My favorite knife company, New West Knifeworks, has sent me a set of their gorgeous steak knives to give away to you, my faithful and loving readers. These knives are, to be frank, the shit. They retail for $59 each and might be the highest quality knives you ever touch. The Japanese steel blades have an extremely high carbon level which allows them to take (and keep) a much finer edge than even the best cutlery. And you can see how beautiful those handles are.

This is going to be a winner takes all event. You get both knives with the protective leather sheaths.

Win Tickets to the 2009 Food & Wine Celebration

The 7th Annual Food and Wine Celebration is being held at the Culinary Vegetable Institute in beautiful Milan, OH to benefit Veggie U, a not-for-profit organization that is working to raise awareness of healthy eating with fourth-graders across the country. The event is taking place July 18 4-9 p.m. and attendees will get to experience dishes from over 40 nationally renowned chefs as well as wines from vineyards across the country.

In addition to the numerous chefs on hand, there will be a special “Star Chef” competition between a few chefs you’ve seen on television: Chef Paula DeSilva, Lee Ann Wong, and Chef James Briscione. Judging the competition will be Cleveland’s own Michael Ruhlman, Alex Guarnaschelli, Bruce Seidel and Fred Griffith.

And now you have a chance to go for free. I’m giving away a pair of tickets (a $300 value), at random, to one person that comments on this post by Friday July 10 at 5 p.m. Just leave a comment letting me know you’re interested and you’re in the drawing. We’re giving away another one of those great Our Town and All Around restaurant coupon books with a nifty little contest.

As I’m sure you’ve probably noticed, Eatingcleveland.com has gone through a bit of a redesign. We’ve increased the pop, but cleaned things up so the site is a little more friendly to our readers. We think it’s awesome like Rosario Dawson, but we need your help in finishing it.

The Contest

We need a tagline that perfectly describes the site. The one that’s up on the left there is ok, but we think you could do better.

Come up with a tagline and leave it in the comments. It’s got to be short so that it can fit up on the left side there, but make sure its funny, sucka.

I’ve Got Crabs, Let Me Give Them to You

While I was on my way home from work a few weeks ago I got an unpleasant call from my wife, “You’ve got crabs!” she said. I knew it might happen one day, but I figured I would have been the first to know. I just knew I shouldn’t have spent so much time at Adult Mart during the “Back to School Spectacular Sale”. Taking the extraordinary long silence as a hint that I was racking my brain she clarified by saying, “No, you idiot! You got a package of crabs”.

I had totally forgotten about my conversations with the people over at The Crab Place. They had asked if I would be interested in trying some of their products and possible giving some away on the site.

Luckily for my wife, they didn’t send any live shellfish as she was the one that opened the box.The did send a lot of other great things though: 2 jars of crab marinara sauce, 2 jars of crab salsa, a couple of crab mallets and a Crab Place t-shirt.

I had never seen crab salsa before and the combination piqued my curiosity, so I opened up a jar to enjoy with tortilla chips. Although it was medium the crab salsa still had a ton of spice, just didn’t have much heat. In the tomato based salsa were pieces of shredded crab meat, corn and pinto beans. The cold pinto beans set off my mouth’s texture alarm, but I found it easy enough to eat around them. It tasted like fresh salsa you would make at home, but with the addition of fresh crab meat. You can certainly tell that it was real crab meat and not Krab with its factory created crab flavor.

I think that the salsa would go great in those cheese dips for the crock pot, especially now during Lent. Actually this would be great in a lot of Lent recipes. If you’d like even more recipes that would be Lent friendly, check out the The Crab Place’s recipe collection.

Just browsing their website gets my mouth watering with the idea of live crabs on my doorstep in Cleveland during the dead of winter. If you’re not into crabs the Crab Place also offers dozens of other seafood options like: Maryland crab cakes, shrimp, lobster, clams, oysters, scallops and fish. Pretty much if it’s swimming around in the ocean they can deliver it to your house live, or close to it.

I want to share those products with you guys, so we’re going to have a little contest. The first four people who start a new discussion on our food forum with receive either a jar of crab salsa, a jar of crab marinara sauce or a Crab Place t-shirt and crab mallets.
