]]> pea As some of you have deduced, I am with child.  Well, my wife is with child.  As any one that has a child knows, the time between discovering the pregnancy and the birth of the first child is very exciting and utterly terrifying.  One minute your thinking, “How exciting a baby is coming, what joy it will bring to our lives!”  The next minute it’s, “Oh God!  What did I do?  You can just have a baby like that?  There is no class or anything?  I mean, I had to take a 20 hour class to drive a car, but I can just make humans at will?  There should be some laws against this.”  The crazy mix of emotions is funny.raspberry

Like any soon-to-be first-time parent, I spent the first few weeks awake all night staring at the ceiling, unable to stop my mind.  Hardly a morning went by where I wasn’t spraying partial digested food into a toilet bowl.  My wife on the other hand didn’t get sick once.  That’s not funny!  I’m very emotional!

It wasn’t long before she made a run to the bookstore to purchase pregnancy books and she made sure to share things with me so I could be aware of what was going on with our zygote.  Soon, I realized an odd trend with these books and their descriptions of the developing child: They all used food to describe the size of the baby.

It started out as a seed and then it grew to a pea.  One week it was a berry, the next it was a bean.  A couple of weeks ago it was an avocado and now I believe we’re into heirloom tomato country.  How great I thought.  Finally, something someone without girly parts could relate to.  Now I do have to admit that the system trends towards fruits and vegetables which I think is kind of unfair.  I should be able to know when my child is as big as a filet mignon or a Chipotle Burrito.
