A few weeks back, I wrote about a great Thai place, Bangkok Thai, and I mentioned how much I liked their Pad Thai. I figured letting people know that a Thai restaurant makes really good Pad Thai would be a helpful bellwether for the rest of the menu. I am such an uncultured rube:

So I can’t order Pad Thai at a Thai restaurant because that’s backwoods American Thai food. Oh yeah, it also happens to be THE NATIONAL DISH OF THAILAND! Boy are those Thai people going to be pissed when they find out how “unworldly” they are.

I’ve compiled a list here of other foods you should not be eating if you want to be as cultured as these two broads:
Bratwurst and Sauerkraut in a German restaurant
Pasta in an Italian restaurant
Sushi in a Japanese restaurant
Ceviche in a Peruvian restaurant
Pho in a Vietnamese restaurant

And you’re right elaine, these critics are real d-bags, makes this site awful.

Kristy, the wife of the owner of the now closed Wing House in Mentor sent Mark some awesome hatemail.

These are my favorite posts, by a mile. This one is from the wife of the former owner of the Wing House in Mentor, who responds to my review of the Wing House. Here is what Kristy had to say:

First of all this “story” is absolutely untrue. I am the owner’s wife and we closed the restaurant on Sunday February 3rd. We became a NON smoking establishment back in April 2007. It is Illegal to smoke in any public establishment in the state of Ohio, we would never risk our liqour/food vendor license to allow people to smoke. And Dumb ass its Garlic Hot parm wings and not buffalo garlic wings. You need to stop spreading you pathetic gossip and get a clue.

Well that was impressive. Let me first start by saying it’s a bit odd how much Kristy cares about a restaurant that is no longer in business.

Hot Garlic Parm is quite different from Buffalo Garlic Parm, my apologies.

Regarding the smoking inside the establishment, I can guarantee that I was in there after the smoking ban took effect on a Saturday afternoon. There were a number of people in the bar area still smoking. There were others there with me and we had a long discussion about how there were people smoking although it was after the smoking ban. This was well after April 2007. I even went so far as to note it on my receipt because it was so odd to all of us.

Kristy, thanks for visiting the site, your presence is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to participate again, now that you have some free time.

Another friendly Geneva resident writes in with hatemail.

I swear to God, this Luisa’s Restaurant in Geneva post is like a eating bowl of ice cream after a night of drinking beer. It just keeps coming up and coming up.

Today I received an email from Vickie telling me what a wonderful guy I am, or that’s at least how I took it. Vickie must have a lot of free time, because her hatemail was looooong. I’ve put the whole thing after the break for those with a few hours to kill, but here are some of my favorite parts of the diatribe:

Your comments about the (cook)owner and the waitress were way off base. Gee “no teeth” and “curly haired middle aged woman”. Who the hell are you Brad Pit? I doubt it.

Brad Pit? I am not familiar with this Brad Pit you talk of.

I also didn’t know you have to be Mexican to cook Mexican food. Does that mean you have to be a clown to cook at McDonalds? I didn’t realize that you had to be the same nationality of the restaurant you own. Isn’t that discrimination. That’s it, I am telling my husband no more spaghetti because I am not Italian. The next time I go to eat Chinese they better have some Chinese people eating there or I am leaving.

Is McDonald’s clown food? Do Clown’s have their own cuisine?

Your remarks were very cruel. If you live in Ashtabula County shame on you. It is hard enough to start a business in this community and we don’t need people like you running it down. If you live in another nearby county stay there. Obviously it meets your criteria.

Ashtabula County is beautiful, especially this time of the year. What with its vibrant culture and thriving business community. I hate to tell you this Vickie, but the best restaurant in Ashtabula might very well be the Sheetz on North Ridge Road.

I’m thinking about starting a new movement Vickie, what do you think:

Below is Vickie’s entire letter. Enjoy. (Left as sent, no editing done)

Mark,
Wow a Mexican restaurant 20 min. from your house! Let’s see, I am trying my best to figure out where you live or better yet where you are from.
I eat at Luisa’s once a week, and so do a lot of people.
The food is great!!!! The portions are great. The owner and her staff go out of their way to be friendly. Of course if the place is packed like it usually is, they don’t have time
to visit, but you do get hot food and great service. The food is traditional Mexican food that the customer seasons to taste. Not everyone likes spicy food, or can eat it for that matter. That is why there are several salsas to choose from. What is nice about Luisa’s is if you want it spicy you tell the waitress and the owner makes it as hot as you like. What pre-packaged, microwaved restaurant do you get that from?
What really irritates me is the way you described the place.
It looks like an old Mexican canteena, that is what gives it the great atmosphere. I also don’t get the comment on the kitchen. Ever been to a 1950′s diner? Guess what? The cooking area is right where you can see it. You must not go to Japanese restaurants either. Luisa’s is clean and so is the cooking area. Also, what difference does it make where the owner started from,(a trailer or the back of a bus)? What were you born with a silver spoon in your mouth? Luisa’s owner is building her business the American way. Not everyone can start off with a 5 star restaurant. Also, her business hours are posted on the door.
It has taken her a long time to put Luisa’s together and she has worked long and hard to do it. The buildings in Geneva have been neglected for years!!!!!! However there are a few of us who have a vision. We have bought those old buildings and we are slowly repairing them. Believe you me it takes a lot of time and money. We see Geneva as a tourist town with quaint shops and yes quaint restaurants like Luisa’s. You sound like you have the typical strip mall mentality. Tear it down and build it bigger and better. Baloney!!!! What right do you have to make the crude and cruel comments that you did? If you didn’t like the food or the service fine. You are entitled to your opinion. Your comments about the (cook)owner and the waitress were way off base. Gee “no teeth” and “curly haired middle aged woman”. Who the hell are you Brad Pit? I doubt it.
I’ll tell you what. Why don’t you pick that lady up that was going to the Botanical Garden downtown, (you know out here in the sticks there is no where to shop or eat, what a shame), obviously another one of the elite and go to a restaurant that is much more suitable for your class. Whatever class that is. Better yet do you know where to take 4 kids that are 3-8 to lunch? McDonalds, then they can run around like monkeys and play in the play area. That way when my friends and I go to a restaurant to relax and eat, maybe have a drink, we don’t have to listen to them.
Your remarks were very cruel. If you live in Ashtabula County shame on you. It is hard enough to start a business in this community and we don’t need people like you
running it down. If you live in another nearby county stay there. Obviously it meets your criteria.

Well, well, well, what do you know. Remember that nice little piece of hate mail I got about my post on Luisa’s in Geneva? I had thought from the beginning that it was a bit over the top, but there were some other things that concerned me about it. For someone that is just a patron they sure seemed to know a lot about the owner:

By the way, that blond, white lady cooking started her business by refurbishing an old camping trailor into a concession trailor and sold authentic Mexican food at the hispanic soccer games, Latin Festivals and now has her own restaurant.

Also too, it was somewhat odd that they didn’t seem to mind the terrible hours:

We never have a difficult time finding Luisa´s open. The hours are posted clearly on the front window. Maybe they are odd hours, but they suit Luisa`s schedule just fine.

What really struck me though is that the email was signed by Maria, yet the email address it came from was debico@alltel.net, so I did a little research. Guess what? The owner of Luisa’s name is Deborah Sistek. What a coincidence! I found that on her active Liquor Permit filed with the State of Ohio:

Deborah J Sistek
DBA Luisas Mexican Grill
41 N Broadway 1st Fl & Bsmt
Geneva, Ohio 44041

Don’t you just freakin love the Internet? I know I do.

So what I believe we have here is a restaurant owner who disliked my review, but didn’t have the gonads to use her real name to defend herself. How sad and pathetic. Deb, can I call you Deb? Instead of spending an hour to write an email smearing me and this site, maybe you should invest some time in learning how to make good tasting Mexican food. I can give you directions to El Lobo if you’d like a lesson. And please, stop being so stingy with the chorizo, its my inner peace.

I don’t know how I manage it, but I would guarantee I get more hate mail than any other food blogger. Considering the comedic value of this stuff I have decided to start sharing it with my loyal readers.

This email was from Maria in Geneva about my post on Louisa’s one of the worst Mexican restaurants at which I have ever eaten:

Wow! At first I was appalled at Mark´s comments about Luisa´s Mexican Grill until I read his other comments on other restaurants. Whew! I think Mark needs to lose some weight and find a woman who can cook for him to his specs. Then he wouldn´t have to worry about losing chorizo between his fat-rolls while eating tacos naked laying on the couch alone!

My husband and I eat weekly at Luisa´s and we love it. My husband has been in the USA only two years and in his 46 years of living in Mexico, has never eaten a burrito, chimichanga, nachos or fajitas. This food is not traditional Mexican. Do your homework Mark and go to www.foodtimeline.org and educate yourself on the subject before you think you know it all. Oh, by the way, I would never buy packaged chorizo. It´s nasty. Fresh is the way to go. We never have a difficult time finding Luisa´s open. The hours are posted clearly on the front window. Maybe they are odd hours, but they suit Luisa`s schedule just fine. By the way, Luisa is 2 1/2 years old and is bi-lingual and knows that mui bueno is correctly spelled muy bueno. She also knows what horchata is. It´s the rice water that you just recently figured out what it was. Two tortillas don´t constitute authentic. It´s a personal preference. I guess you would prefer two tortillas for the carbs and I´m sure you enjoyed the free sour cream on the tacos at the Latin Cornier (now closed). This was the Latin Corner`s way of Americanizing their food to satisfy stupid Americans like you who drench everything in sour cream. Again, calories!

Apparently you cannnot tell the difference between Mexican people and Puerto Rican people. If you could, you would notice that Geneva is predominantly Puerto Rican. Do your homework! On the other hand, stay the hell out of Geneva. By the way, that blond, white lady cooking started her business by refurbishing an old camping trailor into a concession trailor and sold authentic Mexican food at the hispanic soccer games, Latin Festivals and now has her own restaurant. We have been following her and her food for years. Yes, sometimes it takes awhile to get our food, but at least we know it was cooked for us fresh instead of sitting in a steam table all day. It is always worth the wait. Oh, and by the way, the guacamole is to die for. It is made to order and served in the avacado shell. We understand all these details take time. You should be there when they are sorting beans looking for rocks before they cook them or hand mashing the beans as they are being re-fried. I`d rather see this than outsourcing their work by purchasing everything in a bag, can or box. I bet you think quesadillas are a Mexican Pizza. You have been Taco Bell-ized and don´t even know it. We will continue to patronize her restaurant and refer people whenever we can. It is the best Mexican food we have found unless we go to Mexico. Good luck to you. I hope you find happiness and inner peace.
