Baseball season is back everyone… Here in Cleveland we are all praying for a good season or better yet, we hope we are in for an AWESEOME season!!! GO TRIBE!

For those of you planning on being regulars at the ballpark this season you of course are not only look forward to awesome games, but you also are looking forward to food… YUM!!!! There’s hot dogs, soft pretzel, nachos, bags of peanuts, and of course if you drink, you look forward to that nice cold beer.

There are a variety of different places to eat in the ballpark; the terrace club, club lounge, and the luxury suites. Not only do they serve food the many many fans who come on out to root for the Indians, but they also have a catering service for those who come to the ballpark for a special event. They have all types of events at the ballpark; from business meetings, special events, to weddings. (If anyone reading has gotten married at Progressive Fields… we’d love to know about it, and hear your story.

I found a Menu of what they serve all throughout the ballpark as well as what they have on their catering menu on the Progressive Field’s website.

So, if you live in the Cleveland area, or are coming to Cleveland just for a visit, I suggest you make your way to see the Indians a Progressive Field… get a ticket and of course…. buy yourself something to eat!!! Cause, it’s all about the food folks.

The North Union Farmer's Market in Northeastern Ohio is a great organization, so do what you can do help them out by attending their Spring event.

Farmers markets might be the best way to get your hands on fresh and local food, and in my opinion, that’s the best food to be eating. There are farmer’s markets all over Northeastern Ohio, but one of the largest organizations for farmer’s markets in the Cleveland is the North Union Farmer’s Market.

While they have markets in Cleveland, Shaker, Westlake, Parma, Lakewood and Chagrin Falls the organization also works to promote local artisan food business, educate farmers and revitalize many of our once lost neighborhoods.

In order to do all these great things for our communities, they need your help. They are holding a Spring Benefit at Eaton on April 27 and there will be a number of local restaurants like Lola, Table 45, Light Bistro, Crop Bistro and many more, dishing out some great food for patrons at the event. With live music and a fabulous silent auction as well, it should make for a fantastic evening of food and wine enjoyment.

You can download the flyer for the event here.

Help out a great organization who is doing so much to promote local food in our communities.

St. Patrick's Day is one of the few days during the year when you can enjoy some kegs and eggs.

Ahh, St. Patrick’s Day is here. Growing up I loved St. Patrick’s Day because I would always get taken out of school so that I could attend the parade with my parents. Why? Because we were Irish damnit and Irish people go to parades on St. Patrick’s Day. That’s why.

As a kid my favorite part of St. Patrick’s Day was getting to hear the bagpipers come down Euclid Ave. playing some sweet Irish jam. God I loved that. Until I got to college and Bowling Green decided to stick me with a bag piping roommate. Yeah, I’m talking about you Joe. You ruined bagpipes for me! Jesus, you think those things are loud coming down Euclid Ave.? You should hear them in a 8×12 cement dorm room!

Without the bagpipes to enjoy on St. Patrick’s Day, I had to find something else. Luckily Bowling Green has just the right thing to offer: dozens of bars with kegs and eggs. Yes, beer and eggs early in the morning. Does life get any better? I haven’t seen to many places around town offering them, but here a couple I got from my Twitter followers:

Buckeye Beer Engine – Lakewood

Mick’s – Willoughby

If you know of others, leave them in the comments.

For those of you that love pancakes, celebrate the National Pancake Day this Tuesday, February 24, 2009. If you are interested in going out to eat pancakes head to an IHOP Restaurant near you. IHOP is offering guests 1 short stack (3 pancakes) for free. In exchange they are asking you to consider giving a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network to support local children’s hospitals. Last year’s National Pancake Day celebration at IHOP raised more than $875,000. They have set a goal this year to raise $1,000,000.

A little history…

Known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products…hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.

Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has raised nearly two million dollars to support charities in the communities in which it operates. With your help, we hope to raise $1,000,000 for Children’s Miracle Network in 2009!

A loyal reader writes in to see if any of the restaurant owners in the area are able to help out a good cause:

The Kent State Fashion School is putting on a fashion show April 16th (student show) April 17th (VIP show) and April 18th (general admission).

What we need are restaurants to donate food for the days of the show to feed the models and the people working the show There are around 100 people to feed each day.

Any amount of donation will help us plus we can help promote the business that donates throughout Kent State University.

So if you have been reading or watching the news these past couple of days, all you read and hear about is the inauguration coming up. Hearing about the same stuff for days and days at a time gets old, so I thought I’d do a search for something that not a lot of people are talking about… the menu for the Inaugural Ball. After much reading I found a pretty good article on washingtonpost.com. After I finished reading the article I do not envy Executive Chef Greg Sharpe in any way. He and his staff of 120 are preparing a meal for 42,000 people. Yea.. and I think cooking for three is tough!!

The menu consists of:

Italian Chicken Roulade (chicken breast stuffed with roasted artichokes, peppers and pine nuts)

Tortellini with Roasted Organic Tomato Cream Sauce

Dessert is only being served at the Biden and Obama Home State Balls.

The article also mentioned these interesting facts:

8,750 pounds of tortellini

8,250 pounds of Italian chicken roulade

6,000 pounds of penne pasta

1,000 pounds of carrot sticks

150,000 beverage napkins

10,000 bottles of wine

130,000 pounds of ice bagged

I wish Chef Sharpe the best of luck with getting this meal prepared well and with plenty of time to spare!

Food For Thought
Thursday, January 22nd 2009 at 7:00 pm
Hosts: Bill Guentzler and Debby Samples
$35.00 per guest / limit 75 guests (25 seats still remain!)

Join us for a loft party at Taxel Image Group’s photography studio in downtown Cleveland. Laura Taxel, food writer and author of CLEVELAND ETHNIC EATS, has recruited some film buffs who also happen to be the chefs at three of our city’s great restaurants. They’re going to share their tips for the perfect at-home dinner-and-a-movie date, imagine menus with suggested DVD pairings, and tell you about their favorite flicks and finger foods.

Wine, hors d’oeuvres, and desserts
(provided by Bob Sferra of Culinary Occasions) will be served.
To reserve tickets, contact Debby Samples at 216.623.3456 x14 or visit www.clevelandfilm.org.
