Summer is almost here and all over Northeastern Ohio little Mom and Pop hot dog and ice cream stands are opening up welcoming people enjoying a day at the beach or an adventurous day with the family.  I thought it was a good time to mention my favorite one of these places, Scooter’s Dawg House in Mentor, Ohio.

This actually isn’t the first time that I’ve mentioned Scooter’s in this space, but since it’s been almost three years, I figured I’d give them another shout out.

Here’s 3 reasons why I love Scooter’s:

  • Awesome Food
  • It’s Cheap
  • You Feel Like Family

The menu isn’t anything crazy, it’s basically hot dogs, fries and ice cream, but that’s all three food groups so how can you complain? The dogs are deep fried (hells yes!) and you can get them topped with just about anything you want.  French Fries, including sweet potato, are hand cut when ordered and served in mountainous portions.  Don’t believe me? The small fry, it fills up an entire brown paper bag like your kid would take to lunch.  Plus they’ve got soft serve and hard scooped ice cream, so there really is no reason to eat anywhere else.

And you can’t be the prices at Scooter’s.  Applebee’s and Outback can advertise their awesome dinner deals all they want, but for $5 you can get a huge hotdog, fries and a drink at Scooter’s.

I always hate going to places where you feel like you don’t belong, like everyone else is a regular, but you’re just some random hippie off the street.  At Scooter’s, you always feel like you below.  The owner, I believe his name his Scott, might just be the nicest damn guy I have ever met.  He greets you as you come in, takes your order and makes sure to say goodbye and thank you when you leave.  When’s the last time you were thanked for buying a hot dog?  Huh?

When you go, because I know you will, make sure you tell him Mark from Eating Cleveland sent you.

I love Scooters, but I have to share some disappointing news. When my husband and I went there at the beginning of the season, we argued the whole way there whether we were going to get the sweet potato fries or the regular fries. Well, when we got there, I lost! They no longer make sweet potato fries. What the owner told me is the sweet potato fries were hit or miss. Sometimes they made them and they were good and other times they had to throw them out, because of this they wasted a lot of potatoes. Now they offer sweet potato chips. Although they are tasty they aren’t as good as the fries. Each time we go there I hope they have brought them back, but no luck yet!

I’m kicking myself that we’ve never eaten there when I lived in Mentor. Sounds right up my alley, so I’m going to drag the family there very soon.

Scooter’s is great- I got my first dog of the season there last week and introduced a couple friends to the place, and now they’re hooked too. The food is tasty and inexpensive, the staff (and particularly the owner) are friendly, and a general atmosphere of laid-back fun pervades the establishment.

It’s located right down the street from Mentor Headlands- for a summer treat, it’s hard to top a day at the beach followed by a visit to Scooter’s!

As I was driving to Headlands Beach for a canoeing class a little voice in the back of my head said “Hey, there’s Scooter’s Dawg House. I remember reading about it on a blog. I’ll have to stop there on the way home.” Boy, am I glad I did! Thanks, Mark. I got the slaw dog (YUM!) and when I ordered the small fry the proprietor suggested I get the junior portion. I could barely finish them. This place is a gem. I can’t wait to kidnap my father and take him here. He’s going to love it – even if it is quite a drive from his place in Aurora.

My hubby & I have the good fortune (good for my tummy not so good for my hips!) to live just 5 mins from Scooter’s! We’re ADDICTED! Scooter’s closes for the winter, and towards the beginning of March, we look faithfully to see the Opening Day announcement on the Scooter board. We have added a holiday to our repitoire – “Scooterday”! It’s the first Saturday that he opens and our sons and their girlfriends come hang out with us and we scarf down all things Scooters! The food is AWESOME and my mouth is watering just thinking about taking my girlfriend there in just about an hour for her birthday lunch! I’ll be getting the hot fudge brownie sundae…..to DIE for! We’ll go walk it off at Headland’s Beach…(YAH – RIGHT!)
