Longtime reader Norie from Cleveland sent me what I have affectionately named the Cleveland Corned Beef Manifesto:

I went to Goodman’s deli the other day, they are known as one of the best places to get corned beef in Cleveland…well back in the day they were ….but we are talking 2,555 days since I was there last.  They had great sandwiches and you could buy corned beef by the pound-$11.00 per pound.  I bought 2 pounds yesterday to make my own sandwiches at home and was greatly disappointed.  The prices have skyrocketed to $16 per pound, but I love good corned beef and was willing to give it a shot since I was there and had already stood in line for 25 minutes.

It was not worth it at all.

Very salty and you know you have to be able to cut corned beef a certain way so that it does not fall apart, well this was grainy to boot.  I won’t be going there again. I also noticed the sandwiches they were serving can’t come close to Slyman’s Deli 3106 St. Clair in Cleveland.  With Slyman’s your sandwich can last 2 meals and you are left saying “that tastes like mo’” ( translation for any one not as hip as I am:  “I want more ! )

Goodman’s sandwiches will get you one sandwich that will leave you headed for a gallon of water to rid your mouth of the salt and with bits of corned beef stuck in your teeth.

If you want to experience the best corned beef in Cleveland for sandwiches- Slyman’s is still the place to go and there is another place that needs to get more props  for great sandwiches: The Spot Deli 5775 Chevrolet Blvd in Parma.

If you are like me and like to put your own sandwiches together, which to me is a $$$ savings if you know where to go- you have to check out Vienna Distributing company of Cleveland  8110 Carnegie.  They do not mess around when it comes to corned beef ( or turkey, pastrami, cheese,  even t-bones steaks..they really have it all)  They are always busy with fresh tasty food. You might wait a while,  but they  will give you a taste while you wait-it is well worth it.  The prices are great too.. $10 a pound. this is a true deli, no sandwiches served but everything you need to make one.  So forget Goodman’s, and get Good corned beef elsewhere.

Tastes like mo.  Tastes like mo.

I agree that Slyman’s corned beef is sublime. But for pastrami – gotta go to Mister Brisket (and his corned beef is almost as good as Slyman’s) – http://www.misterbrisket.com

Amen to Vienna Distributing! I love that place! The corned beef is SO good and you have to try the frozen cheesecake dipped in chocolate on a stick too.

i must be missing something with slymans. I went there once and maybe i need to try it again, but i did not think they were that good. I found the sandwich and meat to be very dry there.

    Okay,

I have to disagree about the quality, I have had Slyman’s , I have had Tal’s, and I have had Corky and Lennys, and I still think Goodman’s is the best. It is warm, juicy, and flavorful compared to Slyman’s which is usually cold and dry. I like Slyman’s when I can’t get anywhere else and the office is buying.
