blackberry Jam
That, boys and girls, is my first ever attempt at making blackberry jam.  My friend Jason and I got up early Sunday morning to pick blackberries together.  What?  There is nothing wrong with two grown men picking berries together.  Grow up.

Something I did not know is that farms that grow blackberries have these fancy blackberry bushes that are thornless, that’s a major bonus.  After a half an hour or so of picking I had 6 pints of blackberries I was ready to throw down on.

P1040185 [1024x768] Within minutes of arriving home I started assembling my tools to make and can some blackberry jam. I found this easy blackberry jam recipe on my box of Certo pectin and I was off to the races.  In less than an hour I had a dozen 8 oz. Ball jars cooling on my counter.

The jam is amazing, especially knowing that I made it from blackberries that had been off the bush for less than an hour.  Food doesn’t get much better than that.

If you’ve never canned anything before, give it a try.  It’s fun, easy and a great way to save money.

How hard is canning? Oh, and I am guessing from the paper plate in the pic you ship at Costco? Yeah, I know, I see and think of the weirdest things.

Oh, out of curiosity, how much did this all cost you? I’m wondering how much cheaper canning is. My mom used to can tomato juice and then use it all year long to make spaghetti sauce. Yuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmm.

Before I forget, did you guys listen to Clay Aiken on your trip to the berry patch? *lol* Sorry, I couldn’t pass that up. No harm intended.

I was wondering the same thing as Banksy – was Clay Aiken involved? You know Clay came out of the closet this week……..

Canning is pretty easy. You sterilize everything in the dishwasher and then, while everything is still hot put in whatever you need to can. Put on the lids and slide it into boiling water. About 10 minutes later, you’ve got some preserved foods on your hands.

A box of a dozen jars with lids are about $8 – $10. But you can reuse the jars and tighteners.
