It looks like my favorite knitting blogger is no longer going to be able to go out for a nice plate of foie gras in her home town.  Not that she would care.  Seeing that she doesn’t eat meat, I doubt she cheats on the down low with fattened duck liver.

Tacoma Park is one of many locations to ban foie gras and although Chicago recently reversed their ban, I think it is about time for the City of Cleveland to step up and prevent the sale of foie gras in the City.

The fattening of these livers is an very cruel process that involves confining the birds and continually force feeding them up until their demise.  I can’t think of anything more sickening.  In a city of do nothing politicians, well some of them are active in the community, one of them should lead the effort to make Cleveland foie gras free.

    Have you ever actually done any research on foie gras? These ducks and geese LOVE to eat. They fight to get in and get more food.

    If you want to talk about animal cruelty, how about we ban commercial chicken or beef. Here is one example, 5-11 hens in an 18″x20″ cage: http://www.avianweb.com/images/birds/chicken/massproduction.jpg

    Foie gras is hardly an issue.

    I have visited Foie Fras Farms in France and in this country. Ducks and Geese are NOT confined. And they LOVE eating the very fattening mash they are fed. They fight to get in line, they open their mouths without any effort to get fed, and try hard to get more, once the farmer has fed them. As soon as the farmer finishes with the bird and pushes it away, it tries hard to get back into the line. I’ve never seen anything more comical. I was totally astonished watching this process.

    The feeding and slaughter process is very kind and gentle in order to protect not only the meat of the bird, but of course, the quality of the liver. If it isn’t protected, the quality is ruined by all of the endorphins that the creature releases.

    In France, each bird is examined separately, alongside it’s foie and graded by an expert. There are a number of Foie Gras markets which sell to the wholesale market on certain days and to the general public on others.

    The inspector(s) are present and available to be questioned by anyone there.
    Including by someone like me. That’s how I learned about the grading process.
    And the inspector told me that their grading process was so strict that it insured a very humane treatment of the birds.

    @Terry

    No, this was spurred on by the Foie ban in Tacoma Park. But speaking of Michael Symon’s blog, when do you think he’s gonna decide he’s got too much on his plate and let me blog for him as a ghost writer?

    @Dave & @Linda

    I’m sure that the birds love being fed, who wouldn’t. And I’m also quite sure that the birds are well cared for as no farmer would want to risk damaging such a valuable item.

    My concern lies in farmers purposely feeding an animal in such a manner that a specific organ becomes overgrown. That, to me at least, seems cruel.

    Mark, you’re being ridiculous. It’s bad enough that you’re “Eating Cleveland” but rarely seem to come here. But your last post was about eating bad vegetation and this one is a reactionary poorly-informed rant.
    I think you’re rright that this “seems” cruel. But inspection will reveal that commercial practices in the US are far worse. Let me know when you’re ready to ban chicken and beef, then you can take the logical next step to ban gavage.

    The government is not your father–its up to us as free and autonomous individuals to decide what we choose to eat. I do not need the government telling me what I can and cannot eat anymore than I need it telling me I cannot smoke.
