While my wife would be just fine eating Master Pizza every night of the week, I prefer to test the waters every now and then trying somewhere new. A few weeks back I talked her into trying Skipper’s Pizza in Fairport Harbor.
I’m sure the name Skipper’s is supposed to be indicative of the maritime culture that has always been so important to the city of Fairport Harbor, but I think this is a great name for this pizza place for another reason. This is one pizza place that you should be skipping.
After opening the box I was impressed with the looks of the pie. There were lots of toppings covered with ooey-gooey cheese and the crust looked perfectly cooked.
The toppings were indeed plentiful and delicious. While I would have preferred real mushrooms to the canned variety that was used the real mozzarella cheese coated a well seasoned sausage that literally exploded in your mouth (heh).
Unfortunately for my mouth, everything underneath the toppings was less than stellar. I take that back, that was unfair. The sauce and the crust were terrible.
The sauce, while a little bit sweet, was virtually impossible to taste. It could have used some more herbs and spices to help it stand up.
I don’t know if anything could have helped the crust. It was incredibly bland. So much so in fact that I thought I may have accidentally cut through the bottom of the box when dishing it out.
There is a lot better pizza to be had in Lake County, so you may want to skip this one.

Skipper’s is no more fortunately. It has been replaced by Ribbie’s. Same phone number though. I’m actually having food from there tonight to check out if they’ve improved any. I’ll be having the ravioli dinner.
They have a little bit of everything. Subs (with cutesy names), ribs (hence the name), fish (a requirement in Fairport), pasta, and pizza.
Lighthouse Pizza was a good pizza place in town, but they are sadly no more. They also had delicious chicken wings with raspberry sauce.

Hey everyone, i just wanted to write and let you know that i also agreed that the product Skippers was putting out was not too impressive, i took a chance on the new owners of Ribbies. They are very friendly and cheerful and welcomed me when i walked in. i think they have a great menu and reasonable price. i have gone back several times and have liked everything so far. their salads have just about everything in them but the kitchen sink, (the way i like it) they have great specials, bogo pasta dinner incl. garlic toast and salad 5.95, or a large pizza / get a free large salad. i think it’s worth your time giving these guys a try

I have to disagree, Skippers was by far better than ribbies. The ribs for one are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse and their pizza stinks. I can deal without the fancy sub names…………..they are all “ala poopy”. The only time I went in there I saw a large gentleman behind the counter who was making a pizza. He actually was eating toppings that he misfired around the pizza he was preparing and continued reaching those same hands into other topping bins……………..gggggggggggggggggross!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the people who wrote those bad comments about skippers are the new owners…Skippers was great food for a great price for the town it is in.Fancy named food with high prices will never do well in fairport…being that Ribbies closed after being open for a very very short time proves that!
