News is out this week that food prices are rising faster than they have in 17 years and if you’ve been to the grocery store lately you’re not surprised.  U.S. food prices rose 4 percent last year, but some of the biggest increases were in staples like meat and dairy.

Considering that staples are staples for a reason, I know that my household’s food purchasing has not changed much.  Maybe less ice cream than usual, but that’s about it.

What about you?  Are the rising food purchases changing how you spend at the grocery store?

Dude, I go about 250, I’ll stop spending money on other stuff before I change my eating habits. *lol* I would say honestly though it has changed in that we do cook more and eat out less, but we still buy the brands we always want and like.

I agree with ‘bansky’. I haven’t changed what I purchase at the grocery store. We have however had to cut back on eating out. That extra little bit is what we have add the the grocery budget.

I discovered a little known (at least to myself) secret-Aldi’s and Trader Joes are somehow corporately related. I used to avoid Aldi’s because it seemed just too basic and dummied down, but a recent visit has proven that their produce is great (sweetest, juiciest grapefruit, great romaine bagged salad, good grapes, and what tipped me of to the TJ’s connection-the cherry tomatoes),and they have a “special buy” frozen section where I purchased Pizzeria Uno frozen deep dish pizza, pork schnitzel, and mandarin chicken. I just passed the point where the only reason I would visit an actual supermarket would be for the deli counter, and then I realized that the Convenient Food Mart store near me is immaculate and has good cold cuts. So yeah, I have been driven out of the conventional supermarket by their high prices and crappy customer service. I’ll take my savings and go to a good restaurant on the weekends.

We’ve cut back on junk food, ice cream and the occasional higher priced meats and cheeses. Gawd, I miss nice cheese! We’ve never eaten out or gotten take out often, but we’ve cut back on that too. Like Melanie, I’ve recently started to haunt Aldi’s as well as Marc’s and GFS (Gordon Food Service). I have never shopped Marc’s on a regular basis due to I rarely carry much cash and its even more rare when I have my checkbook with me, but I do now. Marc’s has some good prices, depending on what you’re looking for. I try to stay away from highly processed foods, but the nicer Marc’s stores have nice produce and if you are careful, the meat isn’t too bad. Some of the beef at both Aldi’s and Marc’s is a slightly lower grade than the grocery store, but its still good. The bone in pork chops I got at Aldi’s were particularly good and dirt cheap.

I still go to the grocery store occasionally, but not as often. With so many alternatives with better prices, I don’t need to spend much there anymore.
