I know I might very well be the only person that thinks so, but Panini’s famous Panini sandwich is a disgusting mess. I can’t find any redeeming value in it whatsoever, maybe the bread is nice, but that’s about it.
I generally like Panini’s and they do have some good food. Although my recent experiences with their establishments have been less than stellar, I do have a good opinion of their restaurants.
I don’t however, have a positive opinion of their panini sandwiches. First, the meat on them is pretty dull and lacking in the flavor department. Also, they give you that nice thick bread, couldn’t they toast a bit? It would give it some strength for all of the stuff they put on it. By far, the worst part of these Panini sandwiches is the french fry business.
I get it. It’s a novel idea: Fries on a sandwich, yipee! The part I dislike is that five minutes after it’s brought to the table those fries get cold and wet from the coleslaw forming a half-inch thick library paste membrane that I have to try and stomach with each bite.
If they took off the fries and toasted, or even pressed, the bread it could be a pretty decent sandwich.
All that being said, to steal any idea from those no-class, hillbilly, dirtballs in Pittsburgh is just pathetic.

Sometimes I’ll get a craving for that cole slaw specifically… it doesn’t have that nasty milky residue of most slaw. It’s perfect. But I’ll ask them to break out the slaw and fries, and they stuff the slaw in a cup and pile the fries next to the sandwich. Get something with egg — they’d have to really be cutting corners to not use grade A eggs. The lunch meat they use is underwhelming, but maybe they are trying to be authentic pittsburgh fare.
If you’re ever in Independence check out Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli… for sandwiches, that’s my new favorite joint.

I was recently back in cleveland and had to get a panini. my fav. is turkey w cheese and bacon. the first bite (although untradionally messy) was amazing. the combo of the warm meat and cheese with the slaw and fries was exaclty liked i remembered. it is an aquired taste but a great one.

Wimps. If you don’t like the fries get them on the side.
