By far the most popular post we have ever had on Eatingcleveland.com was when we visited Cheddars restaurant, specializing in macaroni and cheese. You wouldn’t believe how many people come here looking for that post.

Our reader Ryan visited Cheddars in Cleveland last week and he had this to say:

I decided to go to Snickers this weekend and when I got there it had apparently combined with Cheddars. I’m new to the area and have been to Snickers twice, but never Cheddars, so I don’t know anything about what Cheddars was like before, but the experience this time wasn’t great (not awful, but not great).

It’s the same menu as snickers, but with all of the macaroni and cheese dishes from Cheddars. I was really excited as I love, love, love macaroni and cheese, but I noticed a pattern that most of them were served with onions in the sauce. I despise onions, so I decided on the only dish that didn’t note onions, a six-cheese macaroni and cheese (mm). I asked when I ordered if it also had onion and to my dismay I was told THEY ALL HAVE ONIONS, they onions are in the base sauce. Okay, most people will like that, but not everyone. Why wouldn’t they offer some dishes without the onions?

I decided to go with a sandwich instead. I ordered and asiago club thing without lettuce and tomato. The waiter, who did a fine job, asked if I wanted the fries, soup, or a third choice that I can’t remember. I chose the soup.

My friend ordered a salad and asked for a side of the macaroni and cheese. I was pretty disappointed about the macaroni and cheese and discussing it with my buddy when the waiter came back and said, “they kitchen doesn’t offer macaroni and cheese as a side dish.” I said, “it was offered as a choice for my sandwich?” The waiter said, “correct, but it’s not on the side dish menu.” I said, “oh, well then I’ll take the macaroni and cheese for my side dish and my friend here would like a cup of soup.” The waiter laughed and realized how silly it was. I’m glad he had a sense of humor.

For dessert we had the crème Brule and it was fantastic; by far dessert was the best part of the meal. Anyway, you should check it out and let people know about the awful practice of putting onions in ever macaroni and cheese dish.

It doesn’t sound like the kitchen at Cheddars is all with it. That being said, I am not surprised by the onions in the macaroni and cheese. It is part of the base sauce and when I went I couldn’t taste them at all. Hey, I married a onion Nazi and she ate the macaroni and cheese there without issue. I’d give it a second chance Ryan, or at least try some of your friends.

I took some co-workers to cheddar’s (before the expansion) and we had some of the worst service we’ve ever had. Everything that can go wrong with service did. I had to physically go back into the kitchen to request a waitress after we sat waiting for one for 15 minutes, and the girl that waited on us didn’t use an order pad, forget people’s orders and returned to the table twice to re-confim things she forgot. Then it took like an HOUR from ordering time to receive 4 orders. Most people thought their dishes were “ok” but not great. Getting takeout boxes for the remainders was an act of congress, and payment of the check was completely unbelieveable. Everyone had twenties so we threw in and asked for change. I don’t remember the totals, but it went something like this:

    Bill: $38.20
    Total given: $60.00
    LONG WAIT, like 15 minutes.
    Change: $57.14
    ?????

We were super confused. We called her over and she goes, “let me take it back and try again” and we were like NOOOHHHH!! We gave her back some money and said just bring us X and we will be all done. I mean, if we had taken the money she gave us, they would have been out a serious amount of money for our orders, we would have paid like $4 total for 4 dishes. It was ridiculous and it took 2 hours to get out of there, so we never went back.

My wife and i are mac and cheese fanatics.
When we heard about this cafe, we drove about an hour away just to try the food. The mac and cheese was the best we have ever had, i cannot stand onions, but, they were so small and i couldnt even taste them and i forgot they were even there. There are several types of mac and cheese dinners to try. The buffalo chicken mac and cheese was fantastic. We have been to this cafe 3x in the last 3 months, if there were another one of these cafe’s built close to our warren ohio home, we would for sure be eating mac and cheese atleast once a week. The deserts were delicious also, I better stop typing now due to hunger pains for this food. Keep up the good work CHEDDARS.
