Hibachi House Box

I got an email a few weeks back asking if I would be interested in reviewing a new frozen Chinese meal. Free food? Um, yeah! At that point in time I hadn't taken into account the logistics of it all, but one day I came home to find an enormous box on my porch. The box contained a just as enormous Styrofoam cooler. Inside were six packages of Hibachi House frozen meals, a sweet Hibachi House soft-side cooler and some literature about the product.

Hibachi House
One of you will soon be the proud owner of this sweet cooler.

I read through all of the literature and the idea behind Hibachi House is fresh tasting Chinese food from a frozen meal. Considering all of the other frozen food I've tried, I just didn't buy it. While the meals have very attractive packaging, I definitely headed into this taste test as a skeptic.

Hibachi House sent me six different entrees: Spicy Teriyaki Chicken, Mandarin Orange Chicken, Hibachi Chicken with Broccoli, Sweet and Sour Shrimp, Chicken Fried Rice and Shrimp Fried Rice. Each meal comes in a special microwave steaming bag that allows the food to cook in the microwave without drying out. The meat and vegetables sit atop the rice and gently heat up as the rice cooks. While the food is in the microwave you need to warm the included sauce packet in a bowl of hot water. Once everything is done, you combine the items in a bowl and then its time to HIBACHI!

I was very excited to try one of these meals, so I picked what I thought would be my favorite of the bunch, Spicy Teriyaki Chicken, for the rigorous taste test. From the time I took the box out of the fridge to time I started stuffing my face it was only about 10 minutes. Something that really surprised me about the Hunan Hibachi meals was the portion size, the cooked meal easily weight close to five pounds! It was more than enough food for two people, but being a true professional, I of course at the entire thing myself. Journalistic integrity, you know?

Spicy Teriyaki
Real fresh chicken, delicious.

To get an accurate measure of each ingredient, I started by tasting each one separately. First I tried the rice which I must say was not my favorite, just a bit too gummy for my liking. However, the package lists it as Japanese sticky rice, so I'm guessing that was how it was supposed to taste. What can I say, I take the Asian out of Caucasian.

Next I tried the chicken and it was great. Actually, for a frozen dinner, it was freakin' incredible. It literally tasted like someone had just taken it off the grill. I really don't know how they do it, but they really come through on their brand promise that even though its been frozen, it still tastes like its fresh.

The spicy teriyaki sauce too was excellent and it tasted just as good as the sauce you would get from your local Chinese or Japanese restaurant. A perfect blend of sweet and spicy without that heavy syrup feel on your palate.

Things only got better once I combined all the components of the meal. It tasted like fresh, high-quality Japanese/Chinese food, just as good as my local restaurant. Not only that, but I didn't have to spend 10 minutes screaming at a recently immigrated Asian person trying to explain that my fiance is a freak that doesn't eat vegetables, so there better not be any hot damn broccoli in her General Tso's chicken or I'm gonna have to listen to her pout all night about how her food was "ruined" and if that happens I'm gonna come down there and shove a chopstick up your War Su Gui! So, I mean, for convenience alone, Hibachi House is better.

I had some other people try the other entrees and everyone agreed that it tasted like fresh Chinese food. Like myself, people were very surprised how fresh the meat tasted. I had wondered if the shrimp was going to be an issue, but Jason tried it and said that they were cooked perfectly, not chewy or tough.

Hibachi House is some pretty sweet frozen food. We're giving this product some mad props for being so damn tasty. If you're looking to pick up some for yourself, check out your nearest Super Wal Mart. They are a good value as well running about $5 a pop. Keep checking back to the site, in a few days were are going to be starting a contest to give one winner the awesome Hibachi House cooler and another a voucher for a free Hibachi House meal.
