This past Sunday evening the wife and I ventured out to find something to eat as neither one of us felt much like cooking. Our intention was to finally try Roberto’s in downtown Painesville but it was closed at 7 p.m. on a Sunday for some reason. I was determined to find somewhere we had never been before so we headed west down Route 20. This is how we generally look for something to eat when we are not sure what it is we have a taste for. We finally arrived at Longo’s Pizzeria in Mentor as we apparently were craving Italian cuisine.

The restaurant itself is smaller, but probably the perfect size for a pizzeria that also delivers. I want to state right away that this place was very clean compared to most pizza joints with small diners in them. This is something that I never really even noticed prior to meeting my wife, as my only concerns were always quality of food, service, and price. The joint was very slow at this point and had maybe 4 or 5 tables full. Our waitress greeted us quickly and was very pleasant.

The menu consisted of your usual pizzeria items: pasta, pizza, subs, sandwiches, salads, etc. The family of 3 next to us had ordered pasta dishes that were extremely large in portion and looked delicious. However, being the big Italian guy that I am, I decided to go with the sandwich they apparently named after guys like me, "The Big Italian Sub". I ordered it warm as they also serve it cold. I just don’t see the point in ordering a cold lunch meat sandwich, ever. The wife ordered an oddball menu item as usual, a Chicken Brushetta Calzone.

I had a choice of a side with my sub and decided to go with the salad and try their house Italian. The salad was very good as it was loaded with fresh mozzarella and the house Italian dressing was excellent. Unfortunately for me, my "Big Italian" turned out to really just be an "Average Italian".  Although the sub was lacking size, it was very good. Now the wife’s calzone was very large. So large it should have been labeled the "Big Chicken Brushetta Calzone". It also was pretty darn good. The Calzone was large enough that she probably could have eaten half and saved the rest for lunch the next day. Unfortunately for her, she has to eat dinner with me, and I polished off the rest of her delicious calzone as usual.

The service was very good and prompt.  My only issue is that she was a little slow on the beverage refills, but we do drink the cola and tea like a camel storing up for a long journey across the Sahara.  So that is easily forgiven.

The total bill was around $25.00 including tax and tip (20%). I would say that was definitely money well spent for the great food and good service. While looking at their lunch menu, I saw they have quite a few $5.99 lunch deals that I can’t wait to head back and try. I am definitely going to suggest hitting it up for lunch with Mark sometime soon.

Come to find out, there is actually a Longo’s in Painesville that is much closer to home. I called to make sure they were still open for business and they are; however, they do not open until 4 p.m. (during the week). They apparently do not offer the same lunch deals, but I am going to try and visit them soon for dinner as I like giving business to the local restaurants.  (Longo’s, 1871 N Ridge Rd, Painesville, OH, 44077, Tel. 440-357-6060)
