That compass is totally f’d.
I met up with some friends last weekend from the West-side of Cleveland, so we decided to check out the brunch at the West End Tavern in Lakewood. Hopefully this post will make all of you Westsiders who insist that I never travel to that side of town happy. As usual, there are good things all over the web about the West End Tavern, especially their Sunday brunch.
Although we had to wait a bit for the rest of our party to arrive, the service was a bit sketchy throughout the day. It appeared that the waitresses were platooning service for our table. I think it ended up taking much longer because one of the waitresses was always assuming that someone else was helping us. We were there at 1p.m. and most of the brunch crowd had already cleared out, so it wasn’t like they were very busy.
Speaking of showing up late for brunch, it may be the reason why the West End Tavern ran out of Peach Schnapps. Two people at our table ordered a Fuzzy Navel, but they only had enough Peach Schnapps for one. That’s pretty pathetic. Also, the big thing at this brunch is supposed to be the Bloody Mary’s, but apparently someone with Alzheimer’s was making them. One person at our table ordered two Bloody Mary’s during brunch. His first one arrived with a cucumber spear in it and the second one, while it had celery this time, tasted completely different than the first.
The menu for brunch had pretty much what you’d expect, lots of egg dishes including omelets and frittatas. I ordered the Pot Roast Hash with my choice of egg ($8.95). I chose scrambled but that probably wasn’t the best choice.

Good stuff up front, crap in the back.
As you can see in the picture, I basically got some pot roast hash with a disk of scrambled eggs on top. There was nothing connecting the hash and the egg. If I had gotten over easy the yolk may have helped tie the two together a bit more. Maybe some cheese in there would have also worked.
The pot roast hash was very good and so was the egg. The hash-browns on the other hand were terrible. They were mushy and sticky as if they had been sitting around all morning. Not only that, but they had no flavor whatsoever. A real disappointment. Also, for some unknown reason they finished the plate off with a piece of garlic bread. Very weird.
All and all it was an OK meal. There is room for improvement there, but maybe just going earlier would have fixed everything. It was nice to see my friends though and I really liked the casual environment of the West End Tavern.
