For those of you that were readers of the previous iteration of Eatingcleveland.com, you know my love of a good chicken wing. I had written a few times prior about the Wing House in Mentor, but I had not been back since this site has been revamed. However, I was lucky enough to be invited to watch a Preseason Browns game there last week. I was hoping their menu had not been changed because I was looking forward to burying my big face into a basket of my favorite California Gold wings.
For a Thursday night there was a pretty good crowd, but after a moment I remembered that it was the Browns first Preseason game. Which by the way is the last time when true Browns fans like myself can hold our heads high and believe we truly have a chance at a decent season. Uggh. I digress. I was greeted by a table in front of one of the many large televisions that surround the dinning area. One change to the Wing House that I would like to commend is the removal of the four large televisions from the middle of the dinning area. I always thought that was a ridiculous setup and I'm glad to see it was gone.
While I'm on the subject of changes, I had always had a big problem with the service at the Wing House. It was always dreadfully slow. Whether the place was packed or empty, it didn't matter, you got very slow service. Not last Thursday though. Even though he was waiting on a number of full tables, our server was friendly, efficient and most importantly, fast. Food and drinks came to the table with very little wait and without incident. It was an excellent job all around by our server.
Not only was the service excellent, but so were the prices. With the Browns game they had $1 draft beer specials and 25 cent wings. You can't beat that! Over the course of the night I ordered a number of the $1 Rolling Rocks and 12 California Gold wings. While I think that the beers were a bit less than the advertised size of 16 oz., who am I to complain about $1 beer? They came fast and they were cold when they got there. I'm not saying anything.
The California Gold wings were a delicious as I remembered. They were brought to the table so hot that I couldn't even pick them up, not that I didn't try. Once they cooled down a bit I dug in like a caveman who had just taken down his first mammoth. Wings were spinning, sauce was flying and children were crying in their mother's arms just watching the display. It was everything chicken wings were meant to be.
Although the Brown lost the game, no one got injured. Add that fact to the cheap beer and the outstanding chicken wings, and I would say that it was a pretty good night. I'm sure I'll be watching at least a few more Browns' games there this year.
