I told you I was excited about my ice cream maker, so I took the first opportunity I got to use it. Let me just say, it was a catastrophe in every way, shape and form. I honestly don’t think I could have messed it up any more than I did, but the results still weren’t too bad. Which proves one thing, you can be a complete moron and make your own ice cream.

The first thing I screwed up was the recipe I used. I found some fanciful recipe online that made 3 quarts of ice cream. Well, knowing that my ice cream maker could only hold 1.5 quarts, I halved the recipe. It still made 3 quarts of ice cream!

The recipe itself wasn’t the worst thing in the world, but it does say that you should place the peaches into a food processor to break them down a bit. In all actuality though, it completely obliterated the peaches preventing me from enjoying those nice little bits of peach mixed throughout my ice cream. Once I realized this was going to be the case, I tried to compensate by throwing in some canned peach slices. Never making ice cream before, I didn’t think this would create a problem. Well, it did. See the peaches went in there and froze almost immediately and messed with the ability of the ice cream machine to do its job. It was a stupid move and I paid for it with some loose ice cream. The machine never had a chance to whip up the ingredients the way it should have. Not only that, but instead of having a menagerie of peach pieces in my ice cream, I ended up with 6 whole peach slices sitting at the bottom of my pot of ice cream.

Homemade Peach Ice Cream

All that being said, it still tasted pretty damn good. As you can see from the photo it is a little bit loose, but still better than it was when I put it in the freezer. I ate it at 7 a.m. because I was so excited to try it, but I also ate far too much so it made me a little queasy. Such is life I guess.

I’ve made my mistakes and I know where I went wrong, so I expect the next few batches to be much better. For my next two shows I plan on tackling Watermelon Sorbet and Sweet Corn Ice Cream. If you are interested in the recipe I used, its below the fold.

Peach Ice Cream
Makes Three Quarts

3 Eggs, beaten
1 3/4 C Granulated Sugar
5 Fresh Peaches
2 C Heavy Cream
1 C Half and Half
1 t Vanilla
3/8 t Salt

Mix everything but the peaches together in a blender or food processor. Drop in the peaches and quickly pulse the peaches just to break down the peaches so they are barely visable. Pour half of the mixture into a ice cream maker and reserve the other half for a later session.
