Prior to visiting Bo Loong I had read a lot of good things online about this traditional Chinese restaurant. We arrived at Bo Loong shortly after 7 on a Thursday and we were literally the only people in the entire restaurant. It was kind of disturbing considering that this restaurant was supposed to be so popular. Although it was snowing outside, I didn’t think that it would prevent anyone from making the trip.

We were seated on the right hand side of the restaurant, this is the non-smoking section. The servers seemed to be surprised that someone actually came in because it took them at least 5 minutes before any one of them even came over to greet us. We were brought some tea, which I usually don’t touch, but I must say this was very good. The wait staff was entirely Chinese, which was a little bit of a hindrance when ordering, but a few simple points on the menu and we were good to go.

We started our dinner with some traditional Chinese soups, won-ton and egg-drop. The won-ton soup was great. The broth was perfectly flavored and the won-tons were delicious. The egg-drop, on the other hand, was less than stellar. I am aware of the fact that every Chinese restaurant makes their egg-drop differently, but this stuff was disgusting. I don’t want to go into details because it still turns my stomach, but my girlfriend said it well when she commented “It has the consistency of rubber cement”.

For my main course I ordered the beef and broccoli. Bo Loong gives you the option of regular broccoli or Chinese broccoli, I opted for the regular. When the beef and broccoli came I was impressed with the size of the portion. It was literally heaping over the edge of the plate. The dish was coated with very rich beef sauce, fortunately, it wasn’t swimming in it. The beef and the broccoli were both cooked perfectly. The beef was very tender and the broccoli was al dente.

There was so much food I could not even come close to finishing it. I would have to imagine that one entree could easily feed two people. Our waiter packaged up our meals and brought them out to our table in a brown paper bag. By the time we had received our bill, there were only 4 other tables with diners. Maybe it was a slow night.

I really enjoyed the food at Bo Loong, but I will remember to stay away from the egg-drop soup next time.
